Fostering Our Youth
Alejandra R.
I can honestly say that the only reason I have made it this far in life is through the pure Grace of God!

I grew up in a uniquely difficulty environment , but that environment definitely shaped and molded me. I cannot take any credit for where I am today.

I try to limit sharing my personal story, but I have learned that by embracing “your story”, you encourage, inspire, and motivate others to do the same.

I am from Crystal Springs/Harrisville, MS. At age 13, I was officially labeled a juvenile delinquent for being a follower. I defied everything my mother stood for and took the struggles of my father as my guided path. My father was in and out of prison for selling narcotics during my youth and hardly a role model. After high school, I attempted college but dropped out. I recognized the lack of my father’s presence has affected me throughout my youth and as an adult, but I do not blame him. My mother, Susan Lewis, never allowed my siblings or I to accept the status quo. Throughout most of my life, she maintained two to three jobs to make the ends meet. She instilled in me that hard work was a way of life and to never expect a handout. My mother reminded me life would be challenging due to my background and I would need to work harder to succeed. Her core values include humility, hard work and love which she expected all of her children to display. She reminded us often regardless of situation or audience.

The first male role model in my life was Coach Byron Garner. Coach Garner directed high school track and held me accountable and called me out for doing anything unbecoming as a man. Coach Garner remains in my life continuing to mentor and support me. I also use the guidance of Tim Henderson who took me under his wing and inspired me to set goals and accomplish anything I set my mind to do. I know I can count on Coach Garner and Mr. Henderson along with many other leaders to be there and assist when needed.

My wife, Daisha Lewis is my saving grace! Has been there for me every step of the way, for the last ten years her love for me has been unwavering. She picks me up when I’m down and pushes me to be the greatest man that I can possibly be! She is the perfect mother, my greatest friend, and my biggest cheerleader. Thank you Mrs. Lewis!

To my brother, Jared Hines, to the Keesler CGOs and the great mentors we share who have motivated me to take the jump and chase my dreams relentlessly, I appreciate you all for allowing me to be your wingman on this journey.

Thank you all and please if you know someone that is struggling and unsure about their future, share this and maybe it will let them know that it’ll be ok. JUST TRUST HIM AND HE WILL SEE YOU THROUGH!
